Pocket doors framed in 6-inch walls now have a ready-made finish option from Cavity Sliders. The Compton, California, hardware maker has released the CS Ultimate Pocket Door Jamb Kit for 2x6 framing, a set of pre-drilled, pre-grooved poplar jambs meant to take the custom kerfing and fitting out of trimming a pocket opening (via GlobeNewswire).
The kit is built to go with the company's Ultimate Pocket Door Frame, the 2x6 version of its aluminum pocket frame. Until now, the matching jamb kits were a 2x4 product. A Reeb knowledge-base page on Cavity Sliders frames, updated in April, lists jamb kits only for 2x4 walls, in 4-9/16-inch and 4-7/8-inch options. The new kit fills the 6-inch side of the line.
Each kit comes with two head jambs, two split jambs and one closing jamb. The wood is stain-grade poplar and ships paint-ready, so it can be painted or stained to match the rest of the trim. According to the product page, it fits jambs up to 6-7/8 inches and doors 1-3/4 inches thick, and the pieces are cut to length on site for the opening.
The detail that matters most for service calls is the groove. The head and split jambs are grooved to accept CS Trim Clips, and Cavity Sliders says the clip setup keeps the track and carriages accessible for future service. On a pocket door, that's the difference between adjusting a sticky door in a few minutes and pulling casing to get at the hardware. The closing jamb comes pre-drilled for fastening.
Company president Laurie McCowan said in the release that the 2x4 jamb kit has become one of the most popular add-ons to the frame system. "Six-inch walls deserve the same clean finish without the extra carpentry," McCowan said.
The frame the kit pairs with isn't a cheap part. One online door hardware retailer lists the Ultimate 2x6 frame kit at $1,295, for doors 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 inches thick up to 4 by 8 feet, with the frame and track cut to fit on site. That retailer says frames are custom cut and assembled per order and advises buyers to allow three to four weeks before shipping. Reeb describes the Cavity Sliders frames as all-aluminum and non-combustible, rated for Type 1 construction, with carriage packs rated up to 500 pounds.
The jamb kit is available now through dealers and distributors. The company says it has about 1,000 certified dealers and points buyers to its contact page to find one. No price for the jamb kit was listed in the release or on the product page.
Cavity Sliders says it has been in the pocket door business for 40 years.
Why it matters for Contractors
Finishing a pocket door opening is where small remodelers and finish carpenters lose time: ripping and kerfing split jambs, shimming, and making sure the casing doesn't trap the track. A pre-grooved kit sized for 6-inch walls cuts some of that out, and clip-on trim means a future service call doesn't start with demolition.
If you already use Cavity Sliders frames, ask your dealer for the jamb kit price and lead time before you bid, since the frame itself can take weeks to arrive. Price it against your own labor for building jambs from stock; on a one-door job, the kit may or may not pay off, but on a run of identical openings the time savings add up.
Check the fit before ordering. The kit is made for 1-3/4-inch doors, so if you're hanging a 1-3/8-inch interior slab, confirm with the dealer how it finishes out.
