BIGFORK, Mont. — A builder called Provenance Built is going after custom home, renovation and light commercial work across Montana's Flathead Valley. The company announced its launch on Oct. 13, 2026. It says it grew out of an existing firm, Proficient Contracting, and took its new name when Lane Houk joined as a principal partner.

What it builds

The company's website lists four lines of work:

  • Custom homes
  • Luxury renovations, including major remodels and additions
  • Light commercial, covering hospitality, retail, office and community-scale buildings
  • Preconstruction, which lines up the site, design, scope, budget and schedule before crews break ground

Two building methods get top billing: insulated concrete form (ICF) walls and helical pile foundations. ICF walls are built from foam blocks filled with concrete. Helical piles are steel shafts screwed into the ground to carry a foundation.

The website also lays out a five-step process, running from defining the project and studying the site through planning, construction and closeout. After completion, the company offers an ongoing care service for finished buildings.

Where it works

Provenance Built names six communities in its service area: Whitefish, Kalispell, Bigfork, Columbia Falls, Lakeside and Somers. Its portfolio shows a lakeshore contemporary home, a timber-and-stone commercial building, and a recent luxury home in Bigfork.

Who runs it

The launch announcement names James Stirling as CEO and Houk as president and chief operating officer. According to the company, Stirling has 32 years in construction. He started in residential framing on Long Island and in New York City before moving into commercial work, and has built custom homes in the Flathead Valley for the past six years.

Houk said the company wants to pair construction with education and transparency, acting as a trusted partner whether clients are building new or renovating.

Provenance Built's office is at 439 Grand Ave., Suite 190, in Bigfork. The company can be reached at 406-306-8737 or through provenancebuilt.com.
